Mechanism of Action

Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that binds melanocortin receptors, with activity at MC1R and MC4R. MC1R activation on melanocytes stimulates melanin synthesis and distribution, producing increased pigmentation in study models without ultraviolet exposure, while MC4R activity accounts for the central effects reported in the literature.

A cyclic heptapeptide lactam analog of alpha-MSH, more compact and metabolically stable than the native 13-residue hormone and than the linear analog Melanotan I. Class: non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist.
